New release – Bum Creek!

October 7th, 2009

CH75 Bum CreekChapter is excited to announce a new limited edition release by autistic Melbourne freakoids Bum Creek.

Released to coincide with their appearance at Newcastle Sound Summit this month, this 100 copy only self-titled CD is a teaser before the band’s full length LP to be released on Chapter Music early in 2010.

Known for their wild and transcendental live performances, in the studio Bum Creek explore slightly different territory. Subdued loping rhythms and dub-tinged squiggles, vocal improvisation and processed guitar create a disorienting cocoon world that once entered, is hard to leave.

Chapter Music 90s lo-fi revival!

October 7th, 2009

CH6-8 Too Much AsparagusChapter Music has gone back in time to resurrect two long out of print compilation cassettes from its mythical lo-fi past. Both released in 1994 in editions of around 200 copies, Too Much Ash and Asparagus Milkshake documented a pre-Myspace explosion of Australian DIY, as bands and musicians from Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane  (and occasionally Sydney) gradually reached out to make contact and develop a national network.

The cassettes feature scene creamers such as the legendary Cannanes, Small World Experience, Minimum Chips, Clag and Sleepy Township, all recorded in magnificent hissy lo-fi glory. Both tapes have been reissued in 100 copy editions, with elegant foldover covers and newly written liner notes!

Chapterfest 2009!

August 28th, 2009

ChapFestA5Chapter Music presents CHAPTERFEST!

Thrilled by the sold-out success of our 18th Birthday Party in January this year, we at Chapter Music have decided to put on another wild all-out party! It’s not our 19th just yet, but when we realised both Japanese psych-folk wunderkind Tenniscoats and Adelaide fuzz-pop angels Hit The Jackpot were going to be in town the same weekend, that seemed like enough of an excuse to put on a shindig!

So we’re back at the Tote Hotel again, making use of both upstairs and downstairs stages, with a huge lineup of Chapter Music artists past and present.

Aside from the compelling and hypnotic Tenniscoats in their fourth Australian tour, there’s also excoriating synth-punk legends Primitive Calculators, who played their first show in 29 years back in January at the Chapter 18th party. On top of that PIkelet plays her return gig after a four month world tour odyssey, during which she played with the likes of Jens Lekman, Jeffrey Lewis, Will Oldham and many more.

Elegant French-Kraut rockers Minimum Chips reform again for a special one-off show (the last was Chapter’s 18th party), and then there’s Adelaide’s own two chord wonders Hit the Jackpot. New 2009 additions to the Chapter stable are warmhearted scallywags The Twerps, literate pop dynamos Dick Diver and psycho-freakout improvisers Bum Creek.

Another blast from Chapter’s past is the return to live performance of Jeremy Dower, who released an incredible electronic EP on the label in 2002. Jeremy is promising a live faux-jazz tropicalia spectacular, enough reason to convince anyone to get down to the Tote early on the day!

In between bands, Chapter’s very own Crayon Fields will be DJing throughout the night! Their second album All The Pleasures Of The World comes out that day, and so Chapterfest will be your first opportunity to snag yourselves a copy!

What’s more, there’ll be a Chapter Music lucky dip for the first 50 payers through the door, cheap as chips CDs, LPs and 7″s on sale, and even some old Chapter Music cassettes available again on CDR for the first time in 15 years!

So to summarise:

CHAPTERFEST!

Tenniscoats (Japan)

Primitive Calculators

Pikelet

Hit The Jackpot

Minimum Chips

The Twerps

Dick Diver

Bum Creek

Jeremy Dower

Crayon Fields DJs

Saturday September 19, 7.30pm.

Tickets $12.00+bf from the Tote (9419 5320) / $15.00 on the door.

Chapter Music began in October 1990 when a pimply 16 year old high school student named Guy Blackman assembled his first ever fanzine, 10 pages of reviews, articles and poetry (!) cobbled together on a friend’s clapped-out photocopier. It was called Chapter 24, named after a song from Pink Floyd’s first album and dedicated to Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who was their first singer.

Guy released three issues of Chapter 24, and then in 1992 put together a compilation cassette of Perth bands called Bright Lights Small City. It wasn’t until the following year, with the release of a Sonic Youth tribute compilation, that the label name Chapter Music was born, but Guy has always dated the beginnings of Chapter to 1990 and the first issue of Chapter 24.

In the ensuing years, Chapter went from a Perth-based cassette label to a Melbourne music institution, releasing vinyl, CDs and cassettes by bands as far flung as Tokyo, Stockholm and Connecticut.

Now, just a few months late, Guy has decided to throw a party to celebrate Chapter’s 18th birthday, and invited a mind-boggling array of artists who have released music on the label to perform.

Over two stages and running all day, with a free vegetarian BBQ thrown in for good measure, Chapter’s 18th Birthday takes place at the Tote Hotel on Sunday January 4 from 3pm.

The massive lineup includes:

Special Mystery Guests – a mysterious Melbourne band from the late 70s will play a special reformation gig! Don’t miss your only chance to see these guys in a pub setting!

Pikelet – currently putting the finishing touches to her second album for Chapter Music, Evelyn Morris will perform her swirling, psychedelic folk music with a new full backing band. See CH59 Pikelet CD (2007).

The Crayon Fields – also about to release their second album on Chapter in the new year, The Crayon Fields are Melbourne’s favourite minor key pop magicians. See CH56 Animal Bells LP/CD (2006).

Hit The Jackpot – flying in especially from Adelaide are fuzzy lo-fi sensation Hit The Jackpot. See CH60 Soul Money Gang Vibe CD (2008).

Minimum Chips – Brisbane expat moog-rock masters and early flagship Chapter artists, Min Chips will reform to play their first gig in over two years! See CH11 Minimum Chips/Molasses 7″ (1995), CH16 Blip 7″ (1997), CH41 Portfolio CD (2002).

Panel Of Judges – Chugging proto-pop stars Panel Of Judges’ first release was a 7″ single on Chapter, and they’ve gone from strength to strength ever since, recently releasing third album Bad Vibrations through Mistletone Records. See CH26 Blind As A Bat 7″ (1999).

Clare Moore – One half of the dynamic Moore/Dave Graney duo that has anchored bands like The Moodists, The Coral Snakes and countless incarnations since, Clare released her stylish debut solo album The Third Woman on Chapter. She will perform with current collaborator Kaye Louise Patterson. See CH35 The Third Woman (2001).

Lakes – One man primal noise rock auteur, Sean Bailey is Lakes, whose debut album was released on LP and CD by Chapter. See CH52 Lakes LP/CD (2006).

Karl Smith – Vocalist and songwriter for the sadly missed Sodastream, Karl released an acclaimed solo 7″ single on Chapter which made it to John Peel’s Festive 50 that year. See CH19 The Sky Is Beginning To Bruise 7″ (1998).

Stay tuned for more announcements still to come!
